An alternative approach, esp if you have comma separated options for the Groups (ie all groups are in a single cell) would be to make a Custom Field with options that match your Group Names, import like that, then search for each option and via Actions 'add to group'.

Ok next thing to try is to check the civicrm_option_value table. Note it has a name column (in addition to what you can see in the GUI in 5.3.x). In the old days this name column was exposed and could be set independently: here it was set to Offline Credit Card - Importing with Payment method:

It sounds like you're not using the latest version of CiviCRM (4.7.30 at the time of writing). It sounds like you're experiencing the bug that was described and fixed at CRM-19888. It's also related to this much older bug.

We created a custom field to import it in so we had them on file, then as members renewed we switched over to using their contact ID's as member numbers and put a notice in their renewal emails that they would notice changes.
