The fix passes: First pass: ALTER TABLE log_civicrm_activity_contact ADD INDEX index_activity_id (activity_id); With no further changes, this alone makes the above query go from 8 minutes to 1m45s. Just to close the loop on this, i ended up using LUKS to encrypt harddisk where mysql lived. CIVICRM didn't seem to mind it so far and performance doesn't seem impacted.

Logging tables until recently wouldn't be supported. If your install is older and you have logging turned on you might need to update the engine for the logging tables to InnoDB. Otherwise I think it would just be regular system administration stuff not specific to CiviCRM. But for me the issue with at-rest encryption has always been that storing the keys ...

I have ran into this issue as well. Initially I wasn't sure if it was because I use multi-lingual (which adds some complexity) or because of MariaDB 10.2. I had initially patched my version of CiviCRM to remove those empty (): diff --git a/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Logging/Schema.php b/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Logging/Schema.php index b3480601.....
