There is a non-code fix for this:
You could make a profile with the fields you want to display.
And then you search using Advanced Search, and you could select that profile in the "display result as".

Then run the "Advanced Search" and look at the output in files/civicrm/ConfigAndLog/CiviCRM*log*. This will output for several queries; to avoid accumulation of junk data, you should probably disable the CIVICRM_DEBUG_LOG_QUERY after running the query.

You could tag the Employers, then search for them, but set 'display results as' (top right of Adv Search pre-4.6, bottom of first section in 4.6) to 'show as related contacts' which you would set to 'employees of'

In CiviCRM you cannot assign email-adresses to groups but only contacts, including all their related information such as email-adresses.
Could you specify, what you want to do with the contacts in question (e.g. sending an email to a specific address, create a pdf-letter...)? Maybe there is another solution for your task at hand.

It can be done navigating to Administer -> Customize Data and Screens -> Search Preferences, the first option is Automatic Wildcards, disable it.
If enabled, wildcards are automatically added to the beginning AND end of the search term when users search for contacts by Name. EXAMPLE: Searching for 'ada' will return any contact whose name includes those ...
If you need to exclude all of those email options at once for an export or something I would search up those people, put them in a group, and exclude the group from your searches.
To search up that group of people I would use search builder (Search>Search Builder in the main CiviCRM menu) with the following settings:

Good question. There is probably no explanation except that the developer who implemented it called it this way. Maybe by mistake.
If you feel this is wrong you can file an issue and if you have technical expertise you can fix it.

This is a recent bug introduced by the fix to a different search issue, issue #726.
A permanent fix will need to be found that doesn't break either scenario. However, to resolve your immediate issue, you can open file CRM/Contact/BAO/Query.php and delete line 3037.

This sounds like a bug in recent CiviCRM, especially given that you've confirmed the behavior change on demo site.
Why this happened isn't so important I expect as what to do to get it fixed, and whether this change in behavior is intended - I'd guess not.

In CiviCRM version 4.5+ you can control exactly how many results are shown per page. At the bottom-right corner of the search results, click the up/down arrows to increment the count by 25, or type in whatever number you wish:
It's likely an issue with the code. The fastest "fix" is to hide that armless message by changing the setting. you add in your civicrm.setting.php that line:
and it should avoid to show that message.
Beware that it means that you might have other errors (eg. from other modules) that will be hidden too.
It is complicated to add a sort order on address labels. I think it is possible to add a sort order to your search and that sort order is used in printing labels.

It does sound like a reasonable feature request, and the good news is that it's already been implemented.
The pull request was merged in March, so any version of CiviCRM from 4.7.18 upwards should include it in the advanced search criteria.
I checked locally and here's a screenshot of the changed address fields in advanced search:

The custom search interface does not implement an API for those actions as yet. I dont think those are hookable right now, but I suspect the best first step would be to modify the code (and submit the patch back) to make those actions hookable.
Once that is done, it should be relatively easy, for the custom search interface to expose the hook as an API

There's a setting in the Administer -> Customize Data and Screens -> Search Preferences called "Include Order By Clause". If you set that to "No" (presumably to improve performance as it recommends), then your search results will be ordered by contact id even when you try to change the sort order by clicking on the column headers.
If you choose to display 100 as search result, your URL will change. The last number in the URL is setting how many you want to display.
Simply overwrite the number 100 with the number you desire, and then hit enter.
Based on the revised question you should:
Use search builder to create a "countries of interest" (smart) group. "Also include contacts where" is the OR operator. I would suggest you specify % UK% and % US% etc as this will at least eliminate options where uk or us are in the centre of an organisation name.
