OK, I found the answer*. The file is civicrm/templates/CRM/Case/Form/ActivityTab.tpl, and the display settings for the activity tab are in line 77. Change 'desc' to 'asc'. With a search (eg Find Contacts) you can only sort by a single column. But if you use a report (eg Constituent Summary) you can select the columns to display and sort by multiple columns.

You should start by upgrading to the latest version in the 4.4 series. (4.4.20). The problem you refer to sounds like a bug that was fixed in a later point version of the 4.4 series. We are using 4.4 and can sort successfully by all but State.

Summary Fields Extension may be your friend. It will create calculated fields for 'latest donation' (and many other such fields) and these are then available in eg Adv Search. Let us know if that helps with what you are after

I found an answer - by editing the file com_civicrm/civicrm/CRM/Case/Selector/Search.php. I inserted the following line after line 427: 'sort' => 'case_subject', This makes the Subject column clickable for sorting.
